Search Engine Optimization: What’s The Big Deal?

Yes it is, if you want to get noticed! While trying to make your website more prominent, sometimes buying ads or word-of-mouth will be very beneficial, but it would hard to get by without search engine optimization (SEO). It seems everyone uses search engines these days to find websites. When someone searches for your products and services in one, you want to be right near the top.

Search Engine Optimization, is altering your business’ website so that your site is more likely to be prominently featured in searches. The idea is to try make a link to your site one of the very first things a potential client sees when she enters your product into a search engine. Plenty of professionals offer SEO services, but if you want to check it out yourself, hear are some things to consider:

First consideration: You have to have a SUPER website! No web business can survive without one, so why lead people to your site if there’s nothing to it? If you have a good site then it will be much easier to naturally get search engines to rank you high in searches.

Second, find out what key words you should have associated with your site. A keyword is simply a word or phrase a web-user might type into a search engine. You need to find out what keywords people are likely to type into an engine’s bar when they are looking for your services. An obvious way to do this is to simply think about what your website is about. If you are selling secondhand shoes, the words “Secondhand shoes” can make up a suitable keyword.

You will also want to do some research as well. There are some free tools available online to help you find out which keywords actual people type everyday. Once you have a list of keywords you want to focus on, you should try to tweak your site so that these words are featured prominently in it. If a search engine discovers that a keyword is the focus of your site, your site will be placed higher on searches based on those words.

Third consideration: optimize the HTML of your website. The titles, headers, and meta tags you use in your website can be the biggest influence on searches. If your most important keyword isn’t even in the title of your homepage-you have a big problem. Change the title or subtitle right away! Also make sure that your meta tags tell the search engines which keywords you want them to focus on (not all engines use these, however). If you don’t know how to change your title or meta tags, look for HTML references online.

Fourth consideration: Make sure your website’s text mentions the keyword repeatedly! If you never talk about a keyword, no search engine is going to think that it’s very important to your site. You can overdo it, but a frequently used keyword is seen as important to search engines. How important can “refurbished pianos” be to your site if you hardly ever mention them? Hopefully you made a great website with a lot of great content so getting your keywords in there will be a no-brainer.

If you want to try and venture search engine optimization on your own, these will be good steps to get you started. Hopefully you will see your web page slowly rise to the top above your competitors.
