The Factors That Make A Difference In The Search Engines

The title tags in a website are extremely important. Just as the name of a person or a book is important, then the title of a web page is equally important. Most web designers are excellent at making websites look good, however they may or may not have the first clue about what is important as far as search engine optimisation is concerned. Why not ask your web designer to explain to you exactly what the title tags in a website actually are. If they can’t explain them to you, you need to get some help with your website.

Meta Description. To continue the literary theme, the meta description is similar to a short book review. Basically, it describes the web page, letting the search engine know what is on the page. It is also picked up by the search engine spider and often (not always) appears in the search results when you are searching for something. These may need to be re-written to make sure that they return the most relevant results from the search engines, in turn giving you better targeted website traffic.

Meta Keywords. Some years ago when search engine spiders were far from sophisticated, the meta keywords were very important. Basically a list of keywords that you are trying to rank for, they are far less important now, however some search engine spiders still look at them and so they are important to a degree. These may need to be re-written, editing the meta keywords file so it benefits you and your customers.

Keyword density. The density of your chosen keywords within a web page is very important. Whilst having a density too low can be a problem, of a bigger concern is “keyword stuffing”, i.e. making the text too full of keywords. Whilst this looks like a good idea, it will definitely backfire on you. Your customers need to be able to make sense of every web page. Sometimes web pages need to be re-written as many times as necessary to make sure that the keyword density is correct, the copy reads properly, and most importantly, your customers end up buying or enquiring as appropriate.

Header tags (like H1, H2, etc.) are the html way of saying that a piece of information is important. There is a hierarchy of tags, H1 being the highest or most important and so on. Please don’t make the mistake of just stuffing keywords into the header tags, however if you discretely use this feature, your performance in the search engines will definitely benefit as a result.

Image alt tags are descriptions for images. If you have moused over an image and seen text come up, you have seen the actual use of the alt tag. This can make your website easier to use for visually impaired people as they audibly hear the description if they have the correct software installed. You should not have every image alt tag completed with your keyword phrase, however, judicious use of keyword phrases in your image alt tags can really help your search engine efforts.
