Any query of a popular phrase in a search engine would yield a large number of results. In this competitive scenario, Search Engine Optimization or SEO enables a firm to feature among the top search results for a search relating to a specific word. Figuring at the top of a web search means more traffic for your website, resulting in more business, and that is why SEO has attained such prominence in the past few years.

There are two types of SEO – white hat and black hat. The tools used in black hat SEO for ensuring a place for the website in the top results are not seen as ethical. In contrast, white hat SEO abides by all the rules prescribed by the search engines and concentrates on the methods which are commonly accepted.

In order to understand the significance of a web page for a particular keyword, search engines conventionally used the page’s Meta data, which is inserted into the code of the page by webmasters. But, nowadays, a huge proportion of search engines have started using complicated algorithms which assess over two hundred different factors to rank search results.

SEO specialists try to figure out the significance of many components in the search algorithms and keep in touch with the latest modifications that are introduced by different search engines. Based on these findings, they improve the SEO techniques used by their customers so that their websites remain competitive. When the search results were exclusively dependent on Meta data and the content of the web page, this task involved optimizing the Meta tags of the web pages and ensuring that the keyword density of each page was just appropriate.

Despite the continued importance of the onsite aspects, the search engines now put much more emphasis on how popular a page is. The popularity of a particular web page is decided by how many other pages link to it. It is more like a democratic process as every link to the web page can be seen as a vote. Therefore, SEO these days needs strategic work outside the site such as distributing free content in exchange of links to the website and establishing a presence on blogs and other social mediums online.

The crucial aspect of SEO to be always kept in mind is that it is not a one time task. This field keeps evolving and your techniques must be up to date with the changes. That is why it is so critical to have a good SEO consultant by your side.
